The Austrian Railway Group
Vintage Travel

Many people enjoying travelling in or behind vintage locomotive. Exactly what is a vintage item is hard to define. But we are using any loco or coaches that are no longer in service on their owning railway.

Thus the Montfonerabahn's 1045 and the OBB's 1245 both qualify. So to does a BR52 even though some of these still operate in Poland for the PKP.

Remember railways are dangerous places.

Take care when photographing.

9.30 in the morning, and 52 4984 pulls round the curve west of Admont and try as we might, we barely caught up as it reached the station. Next we watch as it stands at the head of the train as passengers unload.

Then later in the day, after lunch and a visit to the monastery, 4984 heads off for Hieflau.

Pursuing the train, we reach Gstatterboden just as the crossing shuts, and see it flash across. The next clip shows what little you see by the roadside in the pass. The same station provides the venue for a lengthy clip as it curves round, through and back towards Admont later in the day

Discovery Watch from the car as we chase the 52 back towards Admont. Three shots.

There we watch 52 4984 arrive into the platform. Then shuffle forward to clear the crossing poubt in the station. At last to the clanging of the level crossing bells, it leaves and heads for Selzthal. En route we catch up for a final glance as it pulls away from a photo stop and pickup.

A number of private charter trains operate in Austria, usually during the Summer holidays. As these are not always regular charters, they have not been included in this section. However there are regular services in Eastern and Central Austria which are operated by Erlebnis Bahn und Schiff on behalf of ÖBB, local councils, and local tourist information centres. Underwritten by the councils, these services operate mainly at weekends, sometimes with modern locos and nostalgic rolling stock. In all cases, these operate like normal service trains (although with elderly locos or coaches) at standard fares, and normal ÖBB tickets are used. Reductions with Vorteils cards are valid, and cycles are carried free.
Tour E1 runs from Wien Südbahnhof to Wiener Neustadt, where the train divides:
E1a goes to Puchberg am Schneeberg, where there is time for a return trip on the Schneebergbahn BR>E1b goes over the Semmering Pass to Mürzzuschlag and return
E1c goes to Gutenstein. All these "Erlebniszug Zauberberge - runs each Saturday, Sunday and public holiday throughout the year

Tour E4 operates from Wien Südbahnhof to St. Valentin via Tulln, Krems and der Donau and Emmersdorf - Erlebniszug Wachau - and return, running daily between May and October, and at weekends and Public Holidays at other times.
