Waldviertler Schmalspurbahnverein From Gerhard Urban (based in Wien)
The WSV's first train arrived at Altnagelberg
station on Saturday 19th June 2004 after
cutting the yellow-blue tape (provincial colours)
with steam loco 170.1: this was the first scheduled
Summer Saturday service of the season.
From 1992/3 the WSV worked hard to gain
access to Altnagelberg station tracks,
but it was only 2003 when help from the
province's transport organisation NOeVOG
allowed for real negotiations. WSV trains
now operate over 13 instead of (formerly)
12.6 kilometers each way. Today’s schedules
allow convenient visits to the glass maker's
Apfelthaler Museum and Glass production during
the 70 minute lay-overs in Altnagelberg, while
those passengers heading for a drink may use the
former terminus Herrenhaus to re- join the train
for the return to Heidenreichstein.
Every Wednesday to Sept 15th there will
be convenient changes at Altnagelberg
between OeBB and WSV trains (for going onto
Gmuend, Weitra or Langschlag), while there
are several Sundays with trains for Litschau
or Gmuend (11/25 July, 8/22 August; Saturday 25th September).
