Klein Planning

Description of layout

(may be used in programme and publicity if desired)

Klein Planning is typical of the single track secondary lines that originated from the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and are today found in rolling hills in the north of Austria. Such lines were cut by the Iron Curtain and remained closed to through traffic for many years after WW2. Hence Klein Planning found itself at the end of the line.

The scene depicted represents 1960(ish) operations by the ÖBB with short passenger trains, some mixed workings and local freight traffic. Steam locomotives (typically classes 35, 52, 56, 77, 78 & 93) remain in charge of many services, while diesels (classes 2045, 2050 & 5146 railcars) have begun to take a share of the rosters.

Very few similar lines remain open today, but the opening of borders between E.U. countries brings hope that some will be restored to cross the border once more into the Czech Republic.

"The layout uses Rocoline track with cab control via two Gaugemaster hand-held feedback controllers

Stock used varies depending on the operators, but may include

  1. steam locos like the Austrian built classes listed above
  2. early diesels in ÖBB green like class 2045 and 2050
  3. blue and cream railcars of class 5146

The layout is based on Epoch 3.
