In the days of the former Jugoslavia, trains crossed the border regularly. Today there is no actual crossing between any part of the former Jugoslavia and Austria except Slovenia.

This section therefore looks at the former Jugoslavia, and the newer republics except Slovenia thereafter.
German and Austrian locos head freights in Jesenice yard 1989 Slightly cheating, but these freights were in the JZ yard at Jesenice before Slovenian independance. Some freights were taken to Villach for remarshalling, others worked right through Austria,
