Bergisel at Innsbruck
Built in 2001 to replace a trudge of 455 steps
from the landing area to the base of the control
tower at the Bergisel ski jump (Sprungschanze) on the
southern outskirts of Innsbruck. The funicular can transport
350 people an hour on the 3 minute journey, carrying 35
people at a time in a single vehicle built by Leitner.
The funicular and sprungschanze are open for most of the
year, with people practicing jumping even in summer. There
is a restaurant near the top of the tower, with wonderful
views over the city of Innsbruck. The charge for the ride on
the funicular includes access to the stadium, a return
trip in the elevator in the control tower, as far as the
panorama platform, and (between April and October) entrance
to the nearby Kaiser Jäger Museum.
The funicular is closed for maintenance for two weeks each
November and April.
The two pictures show the Bergisel Sprungschanze in 1999,
before the funicular was built. They do, however, show the
proximity to the Hauptbahnhof and the Wilton Basilica. The
view down from the jump is of the graveyard in the church grounds.
