The Austrian Railway Group : Funiculars in Austria
Fleißalmbahn
Heiligenblut. This funicular is unique for many reasons.
Built in 1987 by Doppelmeyer, the Fleißalmbahn takes skiers
from the talstation at Roßbach, above the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße
from above the town of Heiligenblut to the skiing area of Fleißalm. The
line is 1,810 metres long, and transports 80 customers at a time in
five connected cars. The cars are suspended from the line, for this
is a monorail – but the unique aspect of this line is that 90% of it
is in tunnel. The line uses the bore of a hydro-electric power scheme
pipeline which uses meltwater from the Pasterze glacier in summer. The pipeline, and therefore the funicular,
loses 63 metres in height between the end stations.
