The Austrian Railway Group : Funiculars in Austria

The Journey
a freight funicular at Salzburg

Looking down the length of the goods lift into Höhensalzburg. Called "The Journey", the hand- operated, rope worked incline was built in 1504, and is the oldest funicular in the world. It passes through five sets of fortifications on its 304 metre long climb from Brunhausgasse. Near the upper station, the line passes through a wooden-shingle covered box. For many years worked by prisoners in the Castle - "The Penitents" - turning a capstan in the courtyard, oxen were later used, and the line is now electrically powered, and in daily use.
