The Austrian Railway Group : Funiculars in Austria

Panoramabahn Kaiser Maximilian

Kufstein : Tirol

The funicular connects the Festungneuhof, near the town centre, with the Schloss Rondell, the Round Tower, allowing visitors to the castle to ride up the steep access road. The route is, however, re-using the foundations of a goods funicular which existed on the site since the late 17th century, and possibly earlier. This construction, powered by prisoners, was used to bring goods into the castle, and on at least one occasion, to re-equip the castle with cannon. By then closed and out of use, the goods funicular was demolished in 1965.

In 1999 a new passenger funicular was constructed along the same line, using new stations at Festungsneuhof (Talstation) and Schlossrondell (Bergstation). The Talstation is little more than glass screening and an entrance turnstile, with a stepped platform . The platform edge is protected by an automatic door, which lines up with door on the single carriage. The car has a capacity of 10 people, and appears to work "on demand". Access from the station is over the bridge across the Inn river, and is about 600 metres away through the town centre. The castle is open daily, although opening in winter is restricted.
