The funicular is at the Hallstatt mine museum, to the south of Hallstatt in the village of Lahn. The funicular starts from the talsattion beside the entrance to the museum.

The funicular, with two counterbalanced cars, connects the valley with the salt area on the hanging valley above Hallstatt. The cabins each hold 28 people, and the line rises 300 metres in 760 metres. Built in 1980 by Wagner Burro, the line is only open between May and September.

Attractions at the berg include the Rudolfsturm, a tower used to defend the salt-makers from foreign invaders; the Hallstatt Necropolis, an Elder Iron Age burial ground containing 4,000 preserved skeletons; a subterranean salt lake, and a wooden slide inside the mountain.
