The changing face of the 1042s
by Mike Parsons
As far as 1042.520, the class was delivered wearing tannengrun livery and with the "Flugelrad" symbol on the front of the engine. from .531 the livery when new was Blutorange, whilst it was not until at least .645 (and probably later) that the then new "Square 0" symbol appeared on new locomotives. One of the features amended during refurbishment is the removal of the corner cab windows. Many 1042s are being so treated at depots as an intermediate step. 1042.514-6 had received this modification when photographed at ZVbf Wien Kledering on 24th August, 1994. Note that the knee of the single arm pantograph points outwards, a feature of 1042.020 to 1042.520. Those from 1042.531 onwards face inwards. (photo Ron Ferguson)
The full refurbishment involves, amongst other things, the replacement of the headlight clusters and a new livery including repositioning of the bodyside number. One of the early locos to be treated was 1042.610-4. which was photographed at Mittenwald on 30th November, 1992 (photo Mike Parsons)
