Kreuzeckbahn

There are two funiculars in the Mölltal Valley at Kolbnitz, approximately halfway between Spital-Millstattersee and Mallnitz-Obervellach on the Tauern line. Both were built in connection with hydro-electric schemes – the Reisseckbahn on the south-facing Reisseck, and the Kreuzeckbahn on the north-facing Kreuzeck. The Kreuzeckbahn follows the pipework from a dam high up in the mountains down to the Draukraft power station beside the Möll River.

The Kreuzeck Funicular, opened on 09 October 1974, is promoted as the Panoramabahn Kreuzeck. It is 1.28km long, rising 606 metres at a maximum gradient of 75%. As with some other funiculars with a concavity (a steepening in gradient over a short stretch of line) the Panoramabahn has a portico to prevent the cable rising too far above the car, pulling it off the track.

The two cars of the funicular are open stepped platform cars, each seating 50 people, all facing downhill. The cars are covered by a tarpaulin roof, but the sides are open. The two cars are counterbalanced and there is a passing loop at the halfway point. One of the cars is original, but the other once worked on the Golmerbahn 2 (which used to run up the Golm from near Schruns on the Montafonerbahn until it closed in 1994, being replaced by a cable car). There is also a four-wheeled truck which can be attached to the lower end of a car, in order to take equipment up the mountain for the hydro-electric scheme, and for supplies to the restaurant on the mountain top.

The ride between the bottom station, Tratten, and the top station Kreuzeck Bergstation, takes 11 minutes, with a maximum speed of 2.3 metres per second. Visitors should be aware that the funicular does not run over the lunch period. The return are in 2004 was 9 Euro.

The funicular also possesses a maintenance truck – a larger flat vehicle, which replaces one of the cars when needed.

Visitors arriving by train should be prepared for a walk. The route down from the ÖBB station is steep (600m) into Kolbnitz, across the river, then up to the talstation. Total distance is 1.3 km, but the funicular is visible from the station.
