in ARG Journal 34,it was reported that at the beginning of March 2000 there were three class 1016 locomotives operating in Austria - 1016.003 operating on the Westbahn, 1016.002 operating out of Wien Süd on training runs on double-deck stock to and from Wiener Neustadt and 1016.004 based at Linz on crew training duties. Sister locomotive 1116.001 was on test in Hungary. The first two, 1016.002 and 1016.003 were officially taken into ÖBB traction stock as from 17 February and 4th February 2000 respectively.
1016.004, the first to be assembled at Linz, followed on 31 March 2000. The initial series production rate of the class 1016 locomotives from Linz works wass scheduled to be one per fortnight. No 1116 locos were being assembled at Linz until the first, 1116.002, appeared at the beginning of September 2000. The components were supplied from the ÖBB works at Knittlefeld, Florisdorf and Linz itself. The bodies themselves were delivered by rail from Germany.
In May 2005, 1116 246-8 was painted in a special livery to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Austrian Army. The cab ends were been painted white, and transfers applied to the sides of the loco, which include a large central shield, a representation of the Austrian Eagle at on end, and a typical soldier in uniform at the other. The phrase 50 Jahre Bundesheer was repeated below the cantrail line on both sides. The transfer at the number 1 end continued around the end of the loco, giving a black window surround. At the opposite end, a colour transfer of the Austrian Eagle surrounded the windows.
The loco painting had been sponsored by Roco, whose name appeared above the solebar, to the left of the cabin doors. The loco was released to traffic in this livery on 20 May 2005. Roco is manufacturing a limited-edition model, number 63829 (DC), 69829) (AC, Digital).
