The route were opened on 18.12.1908, linking three towns - Neumarktsm, Waizenkirchen and Peuerbach and Waizenkirchen, The origin of the line was its link to the international line , on the ÖBB's Wels - Passau line. A later end-on junction was made with the LiLo at Waizenkirchen.

The Lokalbahn NWP (Neumarkts - Waizenkirchen - Peuerbach) continued to be operated as a separate company, running services between Waizenkirchen and Neumarkt-Kalham, and Waizenkirchen - Wiederspaching - Peuerbach. Since 1998 the service to Neumarkt has been run as a branch line, services starting and ending at Waizenkirchen.

Electrified throughout at 750v DC the line (although operated by Stern und Hafferl) remained a separate entity in law until 1 January 1998 The line amalgamated with LiLo and the services rearranged and improved shortly afterwards. The branch service to Peuerbach was in the hands of a railcar (21 150) built for its opening in 1908, until the late 1990's. This can be seen renumbered as 22 109 on the LiLo pages. There were in 2004 no units left carrying the NWP's 21 series numbers.
