Austrian Railway Group

Schneebergbahn AG

If you arrive at Puchberg am Schneeberg station by standard gauge rail from Wiener Neustadt, you will find the Schneebergbahn base station and depot adjacent to this station. This metre gauge rack railway is approximately 10 km long, with a maximum incline of 19.7%. The railway rises from an altitude of 577 meters at Puchberg to 1795 meters at the mountain summit. There are two tunnels and three passing sidings.

Since its opening in 1897, when the primary locomotive power was steam, ownership has shifted from private to government hands until today, when the railway is a joint enterprise by the Lower Austria Transport Corporation, Ltd, and the ÖBB. Starting in 1999, green and spotted yellow “salamander” diesel powered multiple unit railcars are the primary motive power. Upgraded turn-of-the century steam locomotives haul a few trains each day with refurbished nostalgic passenger cars. Among the attractions are the scenic views from railway and the summit, along with play facilities for children and a hotel with restaurant at the summit. When the train makes a rest stop along the way, there is an opportunity to buy refreshments and to sample a fresh local hot pastry filled with jam.

The primary period of operation is from late April to November.
