The Austrian Railway Group : Grazer Straßenbahnmuseum

The tramway museum of Graz is located in the former depot at the outer end of Line 1, in Mariatrost (number 4 in the GVB schedule of remise).

The collection was started in 1969 by hc Dr. Erwin Franz (the city's building control manager), whose grandfather was the designer of the first electric tram in Steiermark. With the cooperation of the tramway company, tours along the city streets in a 3-car unit were available the following year, using a unit no longer in service. By 1971 the society runing the museum had been formed, with the aim of collecting historically valuable tramway vehicles, to restore them, and to make them available for service running. The society negotiated the use of the Mariatrost depot from 1980, and moved into the building in 1983, after alterations were made. Most of the exhibits reflect trams built in Graz (although there are one or two exceptions), and include specimens from Dubrovnik, München, Zagreb and Szombathely - all formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire - as well as from a number of Austrian cities and towns. Included in the collection are at least two horse drawn vehicles, one almost completely rebuilt by the Society having been used as a hen house for over 50 years, one of the Schloßbergbahn funicular cars, and a coal truck, water tanker and a transformer / rectifier car. The collection of 40 vehicles are joined by displays of tickets, uniforms, documents and photographs which document the progress of the Graz electric tram from the first built in 1878. The oldest tram is an 1873 trailer car built by K.u.K Weitzer waggonfabrik" of Graz.

The museum is run by volunteers, and is open to the public from mid-July to the early part of September each Saturday only, between 16:00 and 19:00. Visitors are encouraged to check opening times from the website, or by ringing the museum, before travelling any distance.

On the same days, an old-timer tram excursion takes place, starting at the Hauptbahnhof. In 2004 the service ran at 11:00 and 13:00. The ride lasts about 80 minutes, and returns to the Hauptbahnhof. One excursion which must be unique to Graz is the "Vollmondfahrten" - the Full Moon excursion. On the Saturdays during the opening season when there is a full moon, an excursion using one of the old trams starts from the Jakominiplatz at 21:00, and takes in the town by moonlight.

It is possible to hire one of the old trams for a private party, birthday or wedding reception, or for a private sightseeig trip, and parties may be able to prebook a tour around the museum when it would otherwise be closed.
